How Does Alumni Data Flow to NationBuilder?

Data Update in MyPenn:

  • When an alum updates their information in MyPenn, it is first reviewed by Records Office staff.
  • Once vetted, the data is entered into the University's database of record, Compass.

Email Preferences:

  • The primary email in MyPenn (Email1) is used in NationBuilder.
  • The preferred email marked in MyPenn is used by the University.
  • The distinction allows alumni to receive emails from Wharton Global Clubs (NationBuilder) and the University at different email addresses if desired.

Data Import to NationBuilder:

  • Approximately every two to three weeks, updates from the University database are manually imported into NationBuilder.
  • New club designations (e.g., if someone moves to a new region) and updated contact information are added during these imports.
  • Regional club tags are added based on active addresses.
  • Affinity club tags are added based on other characteristics:
    • Academic degree or major (e.g. JDMBA, Healthcare Management, Pi Delta Epsilon, Executive Education)
    • Student involvements (e.g. Follies, Out4Business – LGBT Alumni Club, BMBAA)
    • Employment Industry and Occupation Codes (e.g. Wharton Energy Network)

Data Flow Limitations:

  • Updates made directly in NationBuilder do not currently flow back to the University database. Alumni should only update personal contact information or communication preferences through MyPenn, which will then be carried to NationBuilder through our manual imports.
  • Updates alumni make directly to NationBuilder may be overwritten by subsequent University updates.

This data-flow information is also available in the Wharton Intro to NationBuilder training course. Please contact the Global Clubs Team with questions at [email protected].
